| Boodt,
Anselm Boetius de. Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia... Leiden; Joannis Maire:1636.
2nd edition, corrected. One of the most important gemology books of the
17th century. Sinkankas, who devotes a lengthy entry to the various editions
of this work, notes that "De Boodt assembled virtually all of the knowledge
then extant...by far the most thorough and complete up to date... it is
further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary
and must therefore be regarded as the first treatise to offer more than
the briefest views of gem cutting". First published in 1609, this second
edition was edited by Adrianus Toll and featured fewer archaic Latin phrases
and new illustrations. Indeed, the illustrations are among the most charming
features of this work and include a double-page spread of corals, as well
as illustrations of geodes, fossils, and many other gems and minerals,
and
tools and methods of working. |
